Forest School
What is Forest School?
At Aylesham Primary School, Forest School is built on the belief that children learn best through hands-on experiences in a natural environment. It encourages curiosity, confidence, and independence through regular outdoor sessions that are child-led and play-based. Rooted in respect for the natural world, Forest School helps children develop resilience, creativity, and problem-solving skills. It also promotes emotional wellbeing, teamwork, and a strong sense of responsibility. By taking learning beyond the classroom, we support every child to grow holistically – socially, emotionally, physically, and spiritually – while deepening their connection to nature. Some of our learning in Forest School
How is Forest School run?
Pupils in Years R to 6 are given the opportunity to attend Forest School each term. Forest School is open all year round and allows children to observe seasonal changes. All sessions will be staffed by a Level 3 qualified Forest School practitioner and at least one other adult. The children are encouraged to explore and develop their own activities supported by the adults. On occasions, when appropriate, the children have an opportunity to use tools and experience lighting a fire. Learning about health and safety and taking 'risks' in a controlled way are important parts of the experience. There is a designated 'Forest School' area within the school grounds which forms a 'base' for most activities.
What to wear in Forest School
Expect to get muddy in the forest – Remember “There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing" (Wainright, 1973)
In order to keep uniforms and school shoes clean, children will change into ‘forest school kit’ for their forest school session each week.Suitable clothing:
- Long sleeved tops and trousers
- Walking boots or wellies and a thick pair of socks
- Waterproof jacket and trousers
- Hat and gloves (if necessary)
- Bring sun protection (i.e. a hat and sun cream) if necessary
For safety reasons, pupils with unsuitable clothing might not be allowed to participate in Forest School sessions.
Developing our Forest School
Our Forest School Leader has created an amazon wish list of resources https://amzn.eu/bJnjq7C and any donations would be extremely gratefully received. If you already have any items on the wish list that you no longer need we would also appreciate gifts of any second hand items!
