Year 1/2 - Squirrels Class

Welcome to Squirrels Class!

Squirrel Class is a mixed class of Year 1 and Year 2 children.

We have very high expectations for all children’s learning. We work closely with Hedgehogs and Badgers classes to ensure that the children in Squirrel Class are receiving the same learning experiences as their peers.

We have high learning expectations for all our children promoted through our core values of Flying High, Resilience, Team working and Creativity which are instilled in the curriculum planning.

There is a strong focus on learning and applying our phonics skills in both reading and writing, flying high to read, understand and spell adventurous vocabulary.

In reading we work hard to read with fluency and expression, understanding and interpreting the texts we read and to predict events and infer meaning.

In writing our focus is to write increasingly grammatically correct sentences that are extended as our reading experiences and vocabulary acquisition increases. We continually aim to write correctly punctuated sentences starting with the correct use of a capital letter and full stop and extending to the correct use of exclamation marks, question marks and speech marks.

Children will apply their writing skills through a variety of writing genres such as: instructions, stories, non-fiction reports, poetry and letters.

Handwriting begins with the correct letter formation in the cursive style and progressing to joined writing.

The children learn to add, subtract, multiply and divide using a variety of resources to support them before progressing to written and mental calculations. Once a child demonstrates a fluency in these calculation strategies they are extended to problem solving and reason in order to deepen their knowledge and understanding.

Children will also learn to tell the time, recognise and describe 2D and 3D shapes and measure using a range of units of measure. Again children will experience problem solving and reasoning in each of these areas.

The Curriculum

Each term the children work on a different topic that is planned in a cross curricula way, which allows the children to become immersed in the topic, widening their experiences and understanding and thus enabling them to apply their new knowledge in all areas of their learning.
