Geography Curriculum Overview

We have created a curriculum for Geography which:

Is ambitious and knowledge rich, ensuring that our children are ready for the challenges of the secondary curriculum.

Is sequential and progressive and builds upon what children have previously learnt.

Inspires pride in their local community as well as broadens horizons beyond it.

Exposes children to the best that has been thought and said in Geography.

Builds cultural capital through enrichment events and opportunities.

To inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people.

Enriches geography teaching through use of environment, trips, theme days and visitors.

Developing Substantive and Procedural Knowledge

At Aylesham, we want our children to develop their substantive knowledge of Geography across the following headings. Each unit that they study across the school will build upon previous learnt knowledge.

Geography Skills and Fieldwork

(Observing, Presenting, Recording, Measuring

Locational

Place

Physical

Human

In order to access this substantive knowledge, we know that children also need to master procedural and disciplinary knowledge. In Geography, this comprises of:

Fieldwork: Observing

Fieldwork: Measuring

Fieldwork: Presenting

Fieldwork: Recording

Maps and other resources

Comparing and Contrasting

In Geography, we have invested in the Kapow Primary Scheme of Work to assist us in achieving these aims. We have selected this scheme/ approach as it: Is ambitious and exceeds the expectations of the National Curriculum.

Is knowledge rich and ensures that children leave us with an appropriate knowledge to be able to access the secondary curriculum.  Is progressive and sequential so that new learning is built upon what children already know, allowing children to make connections between geographical concepts. This reflects the findings of the Ofsted Research Review (2021) that ‘the geography curriculum in schools should allow pupils to gain an understanding of the interconnectedness of the subject.

Is engaging and inspiring, so that our pupils develop a love for Geography.

Provides subject knowledge enhancers/CPD for teachers. Provides a starting point for planning and resourcing lessons so that teacher workload can be redirected towards adaptations for our children.

Builds opportunities for cross curricular learning.

Builds understanding of geographical concepts: Place; Space; Scale; Interdependence; Physical and human processes; Environment impact; Sustainable development; Cultural awareness and cultural diversity.

Reflects British values through teaching an understanding of cultural awareness and cultural diversity.
