Science
“Science is a way of thinking much more than it is a body of knowledge.” – Carl Sagan
Science at Aylesham Primary School
Science is all about curiosity—asking questions, exploring ideas, and discovering how the world works. At Aylesham, we want every child to feel excited about science and confident in their ability to think like a scientist.
Why Science Matters
Science helps children understand the world around them and their place in it. Through our curriculum, pupils learn to:
- Explore plants, animals, materials, forces, and space.
- Understand how scientific ideas have shaped our lives.
- Think critically and ask questions about how and why things happen.
- Work together on investigations, building skills in teamwork and resilience.
What Makes Our Curriculum Special
Our Science curriculum is:
- Ambitious and knowledge-rich – preparing children for secondary school and beyond.
- Sequential and progressive – building on what they already know so learning makes sense.
- Hands-on and engaging – with experiments, investigations, and enrichment activities that bring science to life.
- Connected to real life – helping children see how science impacts their choices, their community, and the wider world.
We use the Kapow Primary Scheme of Work, which goes beyond the National Curriculum and supports teachers with high-quality resources and training.
Skills for Life
Children don’t just learn facts—they learn how to:
- Work scientifically – observing, measuring, recording, and presenting findings.
- Carry out investigations and make sense of results.
- Use evidence to explain ideas and challenge opinions.
- Understand the impact of science today and in the future.
